Switzerland exhibits lightest pavilion at Expo 2025 in Japan

Switzerland is planning its presence at Expo Osaka 2025 "with the lightest pavilion". Switzerland's presence will also have the "smallest ecological footprint" of all the pavilions. As the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs writes in a statement, the country wants to position itself as a sustainable and efficient "innovation hub".

With this presence, Switzerland is looking to deepen its relations with the Asian trading partner, which is important in economic and scientific spheres. Under the motto Designing Future Society for Our Lives, the Expo will welcome around 150 participating countries and 28 million visitors from April 13 to October 13, 2025.

Three thematic areas are planned for the pavilion and its content: Life, which includes life science, health and nutrition; Planet, covering the environment, sustainability, climate and energy; and Augmented Human, which focuses on robotics and artificial intelligence.

Switzerland will demonstrate its innovative strength through initiatives, research projects, services and products. Working with the State Secretariat for Education, Research and Innovation and partners, it will demonstrate its economic potential as a tourism destination.

Visually, the pavilion, realized by the team from Nüssli, Manuel Herz Architects and Bellprat Partner, stands out thanks to its spherical architecture with five "spheres". With its climate-friendly properties, it embodies sustainable construction. A foil weighing 400 kilograms serves as the shell. The recyclable material will be used to manufacture furniture after the Expo.
