The chocolate manufacturer Halba is one of the most sustainable manufacturers in the world. In the most recent, fourth edition of the chocolate scorecard compiled by the North American environmental advocacy organization Mighty Earth, Halba, which is part of Coop, is placed fifth in the global ranking. According to a press release from Mighty Earth, the company joins the brands Original Beans, Tony’s Chocolonely, Beyond Good and Aldi as the chocolate brands that perform best with respect to deforestation and climate in their cocoa production.
The criteria that were evaluated included the traceability and transparency of production chains, the payment of a living income to cocoa producing farmers, the avoidance of child and forced labor, deforestation and climate, company agroforestry and agrichemical management. As Halba reports, it was awarded the green egg in almost all categories for its social and environmental production as well as the green bunny in the overall valuation. Both assessments represent industry leadership.
Coop has been making sustainable chocolate products without palm oil and in a CO2-neutral way at its manufacturing site in Pratteln since 2017. Each year, Halba produces 19,600 tons of chocolate, selling most on its domestic market of Switzerland. According to the press release, 600 grams of chocolate are consumed per person in Switzerland at Easter alone. eb
