Kühne+Nagel, based in Schindellegi in the canton of Schwyz, has secured a contract from Chinese wind turbine supplier Envision Energy to deliver 1.4 million tons of wind turbine equipment to the NEOM special economic zone in northwestern Saudi Arabia. According to a press release, NEOM is set to become a model for sustainable urban living. One of its best-known projects is The Line, the carbon-neutral smart city currently being built on the Red Sea.
The globally active Schwyz-based logistics company is delivering 190 complete wind turbines and 67 towers, which will be used to complete the 1.67-gigawatt NEOM wind farm. The wind energy will be generated for the NEOM Green Hydrogen Company, which the press release says is the biggest hydrogen production facility in the world.
Kühne+Nagel has opened an office in the Saudi Arabian city of Tabuk specifically to coordinate this major project. A team of over 100 sea freight and project logistics professionals, transport engineers and drivers will work together on the project. This is a key milestone in the strategy set out by Kühne+Nagel in March.
“We see great potential in providing solutions for renewable energy customers,” says Stefan Paul, CEO of Kühne+Nagel International AG. The NEOM project is an example of Kühne+Nagel’s logistics expertise in this high-growth field and an important step towards the global energy transition. ce/ko
