Bern/Muscat - Switzerland and Oman have deepened ties during Alain Berset’s first presidential visit to the country. The countries agreed to work more closely together in the fields of energy, research, tourism, health and diplomacy.

Alain Berset, President of the Swiss Confederation, and Sultan Haitham Bin Tariq Al Said have paid tribute to the diplomatic relations between the two countries, which first started 50 years ago, during Switzerland’s first presidential visit to Oman. They used the occasion to deepen the ties between the two countries. According to a press release, a bilateral agreement was signed governing collaboration in hydrogen production on the basis of renewable energies, an area in which Oman boasts significant potential.

Additional bilateral agreements covered the promotion of tourism, a cooperation between a Swiss pharmaceutical company and the Omani Ministry of Health, the employment situation for persons accompanying diplomats from both countries, and the training of Omani diplomats.

In this context, the President of the Swiss Confederation also took part in the first Omani-Swiss mediation workshop, which focused on the societal role of healthcare services. Moreover, the discussions with the Sultan also covered vocational education and training, political topics and human rights.

After leaving Oman, President Berset set off for Dubai, where he is due to take part in the meeting of heads of state to mark the opening of the 28th UN Climate Change Conference (COP28) on December 1 and 2. After this, Federal Councilor Albert Rösti, who heads up the Federal Department of the Environment, Transport, Energy and Communications (DETEC), will be responsible for representing Switzerland at the conference in Dubai. ce/mm
