The ETH has achieved the same top position as last year in the World University Ranking 2024: 11th place. It was able to increase its total score by almost four points to 93.1 out of 100. Specifically, its assessments increased for the categories of teaching, research environment, research quality, and industry. The ETH is one of the world’s top ten universities for the newly incorporated assessment of research environment.
The ETH is also rated among the top five for subjects in architecture, computer science, environmental and related sciences, and engineering as with other important ranking lists. Overall, the London-based higher education platform Times Higher Education (THE) assessed 1,904 universities.
ETH President Joël Mesot commented in a press release from the university: “Our mission is to serve society. On this basis, it is the daily commitment of our people to education, research, and knowledge sharing that makes ETH Zurich one of the best universities in the world.”
The University of Oxford remained in first place for the overall assessment this year. Apart from the University of Cambridge in fifth place, the remaining universities in the top 10 are all from the USA. The next university in continental Europe in the ranking is the Technical University of Munich in 30th place.
Out of the 14 Swiss universities assessed, there are two others in the top 100: The Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Lausanne in 33rd place and the University of Zurich in 80th place, followed by the University of Bern (116), the University of Basel (123), the University of Lausanne (143), and the University of Geneva (183). Università della Svizzera italiana came in the block of places 251 to 300, ahead of the University of St.Gallen (351-400), the University of Freiburg and the University of Neuchâtel (both 401-500), the Zurich University of Applied Sciences (801-1000), the University of Applied Sciences and Arts Western Switzerland (1,001-1,200), and the Swiss Business School, which did not place in the rankings. ce/mm
