Zurich - The Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich (ETH) has again been ranked in 7th place in the QS rankings of the world’s best universities. After ETH, the first universities from continental Europe are PSL University in 24th and the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Lausanne in 26th.

In the World University Rankings from Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), ETH has been ranked among the top ten universities in the world for the tenth time in a row. In the recently published edition for 2025, ETH ranks in 7th place, which is the same result as last year. It has only previously fared better in 2020 and 2021, when ETH was ranked in 6th position. In total, 1,500 universities from 105 higher education systems were evaluated, more than ever before.

While ETH President Joël Mesot urges a sense of caution when looking at rankings of this kind, he was still keen to express his thanks to the university’s members: “We can all be proud of this result as it is a further strong indication that we are doing a good job. I not only wish to thank all scientists but also the entire technical and administrative staff”, he commented in a press release issued by ETH.

This year, ETH has made up ground in terms of sustainability in particular. Of the ten criteria evaluated, it is only in relation to the faculty-student ratio that ETH falls significantly short.

For the 13th time in a row, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) tops the rankings, ahead of Imperial College London and the University of Oxford. Thereafter follow Harvard University, the University of Cambridge and Stanford University. After ETH, the first universities from continental Europe are the Paris-based PSL University in 24th place and the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Lausanne (EPFL) in 26th. The latter has improved by ten places on the previous year.

The University of Zurich is ranked in 109th place, while the universities of Basel, Geneva, Bern and Lausanne occupied places between 131st and 224th. The University of Fribourg follows in 405th place, with Zurich University of Applied Sciences (ZHAW) occupying a place between 781st and 790th. ce/mm
