The technology company Lumentum is acquiring the Hong Kong-based Cloud Light Technology Ltd, which specializes in high-speed connectivity, for a price of 750 million US dollars, according to a statement. Lumentum is headquartered in San Jose, California, but with its Swiss branch it is a member of Start Smart Schlieren. This is because it has its origins in the canton of Zurich. Scientist Ursula Keller from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich (ETH) founded Time-Bandwidth in Schlieren. In 2014, the company was acquired by JDSU Ultrafast Lasers, which was divided into Lumentum and Viavi Solutions at the end of 2015.
The Cloud Light acquisition is expected to accelerate Lumentum's push into the fastest growing segments of the multibillion-dollar opportunity for optical modules used in cloud computing data center infrastructure, according to the statement. Cloud Light has a demonstrated track record of developing and manufacturing the highest-speed connectivity solutions at the leading edge of new and rapidly growing technology transitions, writes Lumentum.
“With Cloud Light, we are making a strategic investment to significantly expand our opportunities in the cloud data center and networking infrastructure space,” commented Alan Lowe, Lumentum president and CEO. Cloud Light provides Lumentum with the highest speed transceiver solutions at scale, he said, and complements the company’s advanced component capabilities. “This results in a broad product and technology portfolio that addresses a wide range of cloud operator needs.” ce/gba
