Zurich - Microsoft has followed its former employee Marc Pollefeys to Zurich. The computer science professor at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich (ETH) heads up the Mixed Reality & AI Lab founded by Microsoft in Zurich. The lab works in close collaboration with ETH.

During a stint in the USA, ETH professor Marc Pollefeys helped Microsoft to develop the HoloLens 2 mixed reality headset. After Pollefeys returned to ETH, Microsoft was loathe to do without the professor of computer science, as ETH writes in a press release. The technology company therefore opted to establish the Microsoft Mixed Reality & AI Lab in Zurich with ETH as a partner. Alongside his teaching and research duties at ETH, Pollefeys heads up the lab.

Pollefeys divides his time equally between working for Microsoft and for ETH. When it comes to sensitive tasks for the technology company, the IT specialist works exclusively with its employees. However, in most cases, cooperation is the order of the day: “If we’re working on a fundamental kind of problem that requires a general solution, then we put our heads together with both ETH and Microsoft at the same time”, as Pollefeys explains in the press release.

The collaboration with ETH allows the technology company to gain deeper insights into this area of research. As a result, this helps to drive greater innovation at Microsoft, as the press release explains. “Our collaboration with ETH, and Marc Pollefeys in particular, has already yielded tremendous results, driving innovation across various sectors and contributing to Switzerland’s position as a global technology leader”, comments Marc Holitscher, National Technology Officer at Microsoft Switzerland, in the press release. “Together, we continue to push the boundaries of what is possible, leveraging cutting-edge research, talent and technology to address some of the world’s most pressing challenges”, he adds. ce/hs
