Aarau/Villigen - The newly established Association for Medical Research and Innovation in the canton of Aargau in Switzerland will forge closer links between research and practice. Educational institutions and hospitals have come together in pursuit of this objective.

Educational institutions and hospitals in the Swiss canton of Aargau have established the Association for Medical Research and Innovation. As a press release explains, the association will offer doctors the opportunity to apply to conduct research for periods of 6 to 24 months. Together with their teams, they can use this time to work on active research projects at the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI), the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich (ETH) or the Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Science and Technology (Empa). They will conduct the research on a part-time basis and the association will make payments to compensate the hospitals. This will be financed with start-up capital of 1 million Swiss francs; half of this comes from the participating institutions and hospitals and the other half from the canton of Aargau. In future, the association aims to obtain 200,000 francs a year from donations.

“The strengths of the ETH Domain extend from fundamental research to the development of new technologies,” says Christian Rüegg, Director of the Paul Scherrer Institute. “It is always important for us to establish contact with practice early in the process. For a new development to prove its worth in the area of medicine, we need the concrete experience of medical specialists.” ce/eb
