Lucerne/Davis - The electronics company Schurter has launched a new fuse for battery blocks that can be used in electric vehicles. The USF 1206 model was successfully used by the UC Davis racing team during the Formula SAE Electric.

For the second year in a row, the electronics company Schurter has supported the Formula Racing team from the University of California, Davis (UC Davis). According to a press release, the Lucerne-based firm successfully used its USF 1206 battery fuse in the #291-type electric race cars. This is a safety-critical form of overcurrent protection in the individual battery block of the electric car. Given the limited space close to the battery terminals, a compact fuse with suitable voltage and current values was required. USF 1206 was the only module able to meet these stringent requirements, the press release explains. A higher power density in the battery cells and improved cooling efficiency was also achieved.

The Formula Racing team from UC Davis took part in the Formula SAE Electric using the Schurter-designed fuse. This is a competition that can be used as a test platform for electric cars by budding engineers. The event is overseen by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE). As the preferred supplier of the UC Davis Formula Racing team, Schurter points to its highly respected industry reputation. ce/ww
