Uzwil/Vernier/San Francisco - Givaudan and Bühler have established a joint extrusion hub. It is located at the Innovation Center of MISTA, the global food innovation platform based in San Francisco.

Bühler, a technology group from Uzwil in the canton of St.Gallen, and Givaudan, one of the world’s largest manufacturers of ingredients for fragrances, flavorings, and cosmetics based in the canton of Geneva, have together opened a state-of-the-art extrusion hub at the MISTA Innovation Center in San Francisco. This joint project from the two Swiss companies enables food manufacturers to perform product development tests on their extruded products.

According to a press release from Givaudan, the hub is equipped with a Bühler 30-mm twin-screw extruder. This is suitable for the extrusion of products with a high moisture content, such as plant-based meat alternatives. It can also be used to extrude products with a low moisture content, such as snacks and cereals. The information provided states that companies can research new options during product development with an output of up to 50 kilogram per hour.

The project highlights Givaudan’s commitment to alternative proteins, according to the company’s Global Head of Science and Technology, Fabio Campanile: “We believe that by working together and leveraging our collective expertise, we can continue driving the development of the food industry.”

During a speech given for the half-yearly MISTA in Action program, Bühler’s CTO Ian Roberts also stressed that this partnership provides “a world-class technology platform for food innovators to develop and scale the protein sources that will sustainably nourish the world’s growing population.” ce/mm
